So you’re at the con…

I was in quite a lot of pain the whole time due to back and nerve issues, but I still had an absolutely awesome time. I didn’t see much in the exhibit hall, which is a shame. But what I did see was fun and boy there are a few things I may have to pickup down the line. The Rook and the Raven journal for one.

Wednesday

A nice and quick drive up considering some idiot decided to close major freeways around Indianapolis during Gen Con. Vry smrt.

Only one event: the FFG “what’s up”. They announced a bunch of stuff and during the Q&A confirmed several games to be dead. Oops, sorry, “no longer in development”.

Of the announced games, the upcoming Marvel Champions LCG looks interesting and possibly quite good. It appears to built off both the Arkham Horror LCG and the LotR LCG, which is a good thing. I like that, unlike the Legendary games (which we do really like), you actually represent a specific hero and build their deck. Coming soon so we’ll see!

I’ll probably pickup some of the new Legion figs too for RPG purposes.

Thursday

Long day.

Started with a quick trip into the exhibit hall to see a friend: the artist Claudio Pozas. Look him up. Great art. Had to make a b-line after that to the game so didn’t really see anything else.

The noon game was Numenera ‘Flight of the Seraph’. I won’t spoil this because you want to play this adventure! Very fun and designed superbly to make each character important in various parts of the adventure. It also added a surprise mechanic at the end.

We had more games and events setup for the rest of the day, but cancelled those due to having our friends game to play!

For the rest of the day and way into the night we played a homebrew Persona RPG by Erik Scott de Bie. We had nine players. Nine. And there was a significant amount of drinking (see above image). Amazingly, we actually accomplished quite a bit. Let’s see…

  • So you’re at the con…

  • So you’re at the hotel…

  • So you’re in the Blue Room…

  • So you’re in the lobby…

It was a blast. I could write a whole article about this alone.

Yup. Sure could.

Uh huh.

Any day now.

Friday

Early game… WHYYYYYYY!

At 10am Friday morning we dove into Star Wars ‘Begun the Clone Wars Have!’. Another one I won’t spoil as it was very fun and worth playing. I got to play a clone sergeant.

Took another short trip into the exhibit hall and grabbed my only big purchase of the con: the Beadle & Grimm’s versions of Saltmarsh and preordered the upcoming Avernus. We got the Dragon Heist box last year and holy crap that thing is so amazing just had to get the new ones too. And with the pain building to a glorious crescendo, I limped back to the room.

That evening we continued the Persona game with a lighter party of five and managed to finish it!

  • So you’re in the exhibit hall…

  • So you’re in the dungeon…

Wonderful fun. This is always the gem of the show. Nothing like hanging out with friends that you don’t get to see too often and usually only once a year and just have fun.

Saturday

The longest day.

Started early at 10am again?!?!?!?

But this time it was the Instant Adventure with Monte Cook Games event. Major hilarity ensued. Such silly, many fun.

After that it was the last trip to the exhibit hall for me. Grabbed a few little things like a huge d6 for turn tracking and another hit location die plus the Gen Con dice for this year. Still couldn’t see much due to physical issues so headed back to the room for a short nap.

Saturday night is the night for Candlekeep. This was another great gathering. ‘Leaves of the World Tree’ was the theme and there was much discussion of the planes. The surprise was the call-in from Ed Greenwood himself! A lot of info was dumped. There as even a conclave after that! Decisions were made for the upcoming year of adventure league.

Due to the previously discussed physical issues, we left after Candlekeep and got home quite late but safe. The cats were happy.

Sunday

…was spent recuperating which went into Monday as well.

Gen Con 50 Highlights

The Exploding Kittens booth

They win Gen Con, period. They brought so much laughter and joy to everyone that either bought or just watched. Such fun, many silly, much win.

They Might Be Giants

Wow. That was an incredible concert. First time they'd ever played someplace that big (basketball arena) and it was pretty packed too. They had fun, we had fun. Again, total win.

The Friday Night Game

Always fun. Always crazy. Always never what was intended. Oh the stories. More to come on that one.

The Expanse RPG announcement

This was a wonderful surprise announcement from Green Ronin Publishing. We'll be happily diving into that next Gen Con! Already have some adventure ideas.

The Expanse Board Game

Only because we managed to get two of the about 60 copies available at the show. When Travis and I first got them, we knew they'd be limited. Just not that limited.

Invisible Sun ... things

Got more info and even an example of what character creation would be like with sample sheets too. They are doing amazing things for this RPG. So looking forward to getting it next year.

If I wasn't suffering from a stress fracture in my foot, I could remember more. I'm sure I'll add more later. So much happening, so much to see, so many people (another record), etc.

It was a loud and crazy night

Gen Con 2016 was amazing. If only the food could have arrived a few hours earlier when we were merely hungry. But that was fine, we had a game to play.

The Dragon Age RPG is a great game and over the five to six hours we played on that fated Friday night, we were really looking forward to playing it. I think we got about ten minutes of total play. Don't get me wrong, it was a wonderful night of stories, laughs and building friendships.

"So you're in the dungeon..." was as far as we got. That line would be repeated at least 50 times over the rest of the night as we got off track constantly. It became a meme. We love it and embrace it wholeheartedly. Hence, this site.

This year, for Gen Con 50 (!!!), we're going to (not) play another great RPG: Shadow of the Demon Lord by the great Robert J. Schwalb.

It'll be a blast!
